How to prepare for your Maternity Session | Maternity photographer Peterborough Cambridgeshire

Updated: Jul 3, 2020

I know exactly what is like to be in front of the camera so I try my best to make you feel as comfortable as relaxed as possible! I would like to think that all my clients have felt relaxed at their session and have gone away feeling that it wasn't as uncomfortable as they were expecting it to be!

I love photographing Maternity sessions because I am always so happy you have chosen to capture this truly amazing and unique chapter of your life! If growing a baby human isn't worthy of documenting with a photo session I don't know what is!

Seriously though, aren't us women incredible?!

In my studio I have a selection of Maternity dresses for you to choose from if you wish to. They are stretchy material and fit a range of sizes. I am always on the look out for Maternity dresses. I love to buy dresses that are white (of course) buy I also like to incorporate a little bit of blush pink/peachy tones into my maternity sessions for a soft feminine look

I like to keep everything cohesive, so that if you came to a newborn session with me too, the styling and overall look of your maternity session and newborn session are going to match. My aim is that if you were to put all the images in an album it would flow beautifully as you were looking through

If you would like to bring something of your own to wear that is absolutely fine. I would always suggest something white, neutral or if it is a colour I think pastel tones work best. I would stick to something solid coloured and not patterned. However- these are my suggestions- ultimately, they are your memories

If you wanted to go over clothing options in more details- always feel free to message me!

Underwear tip- (never thought I would be writing that!)

If you wear something light coloured or wear one of my studio dresses I advise that you wear light coloured under wear just to make my post processing life easier!

I have heard "I really should have done my nails" so many times I thought I would put a quick note in here about nails! I usually do a few close up "hands on bump" style shots throughout the session. I am not talking about going out and getting a full blown manicure or anything like that but just to be aware that I do close ups and not to regret not taking off the nail varnish your 5 year old painted on your nails 2 weeks ago ;)

Partners and children are always welcome and encouraged to join in with the session! However, if you prefer to have images just of yourself that is perfectly fine too. I advise that your partner/child/children wear neutral clothed clothing too so we can keep the natural, pure and timeless theme throughout. Similar colour tones such as whites, creams, greys, light browns work well. For boys- white, beige, browns, grey, powder blue would be ideal colour choices. For little girls the light pink pastel tones would look lovely

Trust me, I know all about those too! You might feel insecure because you've "put on weight", your ankles have swollen, the hormones have made your skin break out, you have stretch marks. DO NOT WORRY! I am going to choose the best pose, angle, light to make you feel amazing. Do not let these insecurities hold you back from having the printed memories you will treasure for years to come. Your body is doing an INCREDIBLE thing right now- give yourself some grace, love your body, however imperfect you way feel it is right now, and trust me to capture your beauty!

On the other hand you may not have any insecurities and are loving your pregnancy glow and your growing tummy- I salute you Mama! Embrace everything pregnancy has to give you- it is a beautiful gift

In any type of session I do I believe less is more when it comes to props. I will usually ask you to bring a scan picture other than that you beautiful bump is the only "prop" we need! If there is something you have in mind that you would like to bring just let me know in advance

How many weeks is best?

Every pregnancy is different so the timing of your session will vary. Usually the best time to schedule your maternity session is between 30-36 weeks. You will want to schedule your session as soon as you can- I have some clients booking in at the 12 week mark!

My sessions last anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour- depending on if we have siblings included etc. I know you are very busy, especially at this stage of your pregnancy but I can assure you this hour will be cherished for so many years to come!

I would love to create these images for you

If would like any more information on my maternity or newborn sessions feel free to message me for a chat
